What is journalism?

BBC founder John Reith famously said that the broadcaster’s role was to inform, educate and entertain – and that’s a good enough definition for me.

I’ve worked full-time as online editor at hospitality magazine publisher Sleeper Media, senior digital staff writer at business magazine publisher Insider Media and DirectNews correspondent at news agency Adfero during my career in the media. And I’ve contributed to a variety of print, online and broadcast outlets on a freelance basis.

All of which means I’ve got experience of the following media:

  • Magazines
  • Newspapers
  • Websites
  • Blogs
  • Radio

I’m just as comfortable writing lengthy magazine features about Irish whiskey as I am writing snappy news stories about the latest planning applications. The truth is I’m happy to turn my hand to anything.

Having said that, these are the areas where I’ve got the most experience:

  • Lifestyle (food and drink, hospitality, travel, events, theatre, literature, music and art)
  • B2B (mergers and acquisitions, funding, property, manufacturing and general business news)
  • Sport (football, tennis, badminton, cycling and running)
  • Technology
  • Politics
