What is journalism?

BBC founder John Reith famously said that the broadcaster’s role was to inform, educate and entertain – and that’s a good enough definition for me.

I’ve worked full-time as a senior digital staff writer at business magazine publisher Insider Media and as a DirectNews correspondent at news agency Adfero during my career in the media. And I’ve contributed to a variety of print, online and broadcast outlets on a freelance basis.

All of which means I’ve got experience of the following media:

  • Magazines
  • Newspapers
  • Websites
  • Blogs
  • Radio

Most of my journalism to date has centred around writing news, features and comment for local, regional or national publications.

I’m just as comfortable researching lengthy B2B features about the property sector for industry professionals as I am creating snappy news stories about a restaurant launch for the general public. The truth is I’m happy to turn my hand to anything.

Having said that, these are the areas where I’ve got the most experience:

  • B2B (mergers and acquisitions, funding, property, manufacturing and general business)
  • Lifestyle (food and drink, events, theatre, literature, music and art)
  • Politics
  • Sport (football, tennis, badminton, cycling and running)
  • Travel
