What is copy editing?
Copy editing is the process of making changes to content to improve its readability.
During my time as an editor, there have been plenty of occasions where I’ve had to make wholesale alterations to content that isn’t quite up to scratch. I’ve also taken good material and used my copy-editing skills to turn it into something even better. My copy-editing experience covers the following:
- News
- Features
- Blogs
- Magazines
- Newsletters
- Websites
- Emails
- Slides
- Press releases
- Essays
- Reports
- Posters
- Leaflets
- Flyers
Copy editing or proofreading?
Copy editing is a more in-depth version of proofreading. While proofreaders limit themselves to spotting typos, bad punctuation and weak grammar, copy editors can do all that but also suggest far more sweeping improvements to your text.
It might be that your content has a strong opening and conclusion but strays off-message in the middle, or that certain paragraphs need a rewrite to help strengthen your argument. A good copy editor can engage with your content on a much deeper level, understanding what it is you’re trying to achieve and making changes accordingly.
As a well-practised copy-editing professional, I’m happy to provide an objective overview of your content. I take the view that it never hurts to have a second pair of eyes looking at an important piece of text, and with my editing background and attention to detail, I’m sure I can help you get your message across clearly and concisely.
